Mount Emei, situated in Szechuan province,
is one of the four famous mountains of Buddhism in China. Green mountains undulate
and trees overlap each other on Mount Emei, giving it the reputation as the "most
graceful mountain in China". It was inscribed by the UNESCO on the world natural
and cultural heritage list.
Mount Emei is a Buddhist mountain enshrining the Bodhisattva of Universal Benevolence.
There are many temples on the mountain, including Baoguosi Temple, Tiger-Taming
Temple and Ten-Thousand-Year Temple. Among them, the biggest and most magnificent
one is Baoguosi Temple.
Golden Peak
Golden Peak of Mount Emei is 3,077 m above sea level. To view the "Buddha halo"
is the wish of many tourist. The "Buddha halo" gives Mount Emei a touch of mystery.
Those who see the halo feel lucky and honored.
When it is sunny and windless, after two or three o'clock in afternoon, if you stand
on Sheshen Cliff of Golden Peak and look down, you may sometimes see a colorful
aureole floating over cloud. Your body will appear in the aureole. When you move,
the aureole moves with you. No matter how many people stand together viewing it,
they invariably see their own shadows alone. In the past, people couldn't explain
this phenomenon and thought it was Buddha's halo. Now we know it is actually a phenomenon
of refraction, which occurs when sunlight, cloud layers and human body form an angle
of 45 degrees.
Legend of Tiger-Taming Temple
In Song Dynasty, Tiger-Taming Temple was called Hall of Magical Dragon. Later, ferocious
tigers appeared near the temple and often attacked people. So the monks set up a
holy pillar inscribed with the name of the Buddha. After that, the tigers disappeared
and the temple was renamed Tiger-Taming Temple.
